Club Trophies

Following is a brief history of the Club's Trophies

Current Trophies 

Von Roretz Trophy ​ - Australian Pairs

The Von Roretz Trophy, first competed for in 2018, is presented annually to the winners of the Australian Pairs competition. This league competition, using four woods over 16 ends, is run throughout the season normally involving eight teams. The trophy was presented to the Club in memory of Ernest von Roretz, a former member of the Club. Vince Lachowycza previous Club Captain, introduced the competition to the Club during his time as Chairman. A position he held between December 2013 and July 2019. 

 

Wymondham and District Bowls League, League Championship  - The Chairman's Block League

This is a weekly competition played with three woods over 16 ends. Approximately six teams of four, with three members playing on a rotating basis, currently play for the Wymondham and District Bowls League, League Championship trophy. 

The competition was introduced to the Club by Jack Bayfield, a long serving member and, Committee Chairman between November 1993 and November 2003. After Jack stood down as Chairman he was subsequently elected as Club President. The competition was originally played with two woods over 21 ends and was known simply as ‘The Block League’. In recognition of Jack Bayfield’s long term commitment to the Club members voted to rename the competition as ‘The Chairman’s Block League’ at the annual AGM in November 2003.

 

John Bull Trophy - Singles

The John Bull Trophy is presented to the winners of the annual Singles Competition.  John Bull held the position of Club Secretary for a short period during 1991 and was elected as Vice President in 1992. It was in this year that he presented the trophy, a cup, to the Club. 

The Singles competition was originally a straight knock-out competition but in recent years the format has been changed to increase members’ participation in the tournament. It is now played with three woods as mini leagues followed by semi-finals and final knock-out.

Since first being competed for in 1992 Ken Vann is the only member to have won the trophy on three occasions.

 

Pairs Shield - Pairs

The Pairs Shield, first competed for in 2022, is presented to the winners of the Pairs competition.  This is a three wood competition run as mini leagues followed by semi-finals and a final knock-out. Names are drawn from a hat to decide the pairings for this competition.

 

Wymondham and District, Chamber of Trade and Commerce, Bowls Trophy - Mixed-Pairs  

First played for in 2005, the Wymondham and District, Chamber of Trade and Commerce, Bowls Trophy is presented to the winners of the Mixed-Pairs competition. This is currently a three wood competition run as mini leagues followed by a semi-final and final knock-out. Club tradition allows for the lady members to ask male members to be their partner for this competition.

 

Priory Garden Bowls Club Triples Cup - Triples

The Priory Garden Bowls Club Triples Cup was first played for in 2015. The competition is currently a three wood competition run as mini leagues followed by semi-finals and a final knock-out. Names are drawn from a hat to decide the pairings for this competition.

 

Gaynor Challenge Shield – 3/2/1 Competition

The Gaynor Challenge Shield is played for in memory of Dr. George Charles Gaynor who was instrumental in founding the Club in 1960/61. Further information regarding Dr. Gaynor can be found above.  The trophy was first played for in 1986. Claud Pudwell  is the only member to have won the trophy on three occasions, achieving success in 2003, 2005 and 2006. 

 

Derek Buckle Memorial Shield – 3/2/1 Competition

First won by Ivan Freedman in 2016, the Derek Buckle Memorial Shield is played for in memory of Derek Buckle, himself a winner of several Club trophies during the 1990's and early 2000's. Derek joined the Club’s Committee in November 1997. Members of his family continue to attend each year to watch the competition and present the trophy to the winner.

Following his first victory in this competition Ivan Freedman retained the trophy in 2017 and won it again in 2019. He is currently the only three-times winner of the competition.

 

Bartram Shield – 3/2/1 Competition

The Bartram Shield was presented to the Club in 2007 by Mrs. Julie Jarvis and Mr Phil Barrow of R.J. Bartram & Son, a local Funeral Director who had supported the Club for many years.

 

Chairman's Shield – 3/2/1 Competition

The Chairman’s Shield, introduced while Vince Lachowycz was Chairman, replaced the Ted Fowler Cup (see below) in 2016. 

 

Thos Cousins Cup – 3/2/1 Competition

The Thos Cousins Cup was first competed for in 1993. J. Catchpole, who achieved success in the competition in 1998, 1999 and 2001, was the first member to win the competition on three occasions. Since then, John Gibbins achieved success five times between 2008 and 2022. 

 

Fred Brown Memorial Shield – 3/2/1 Competition

First won by C. Ashby in 2009, the Fred Brown Memorial Shield was played for in memory of Fred Brown. He was a former Team Captain from 2000 to 2002, at a time when the Club had two teams competing in the Age Concern League. 

 

Ladies Cup in Memory of Joan Long – 3/2/1 Competition (combined with the Gents Tankard)

The Ladies Cup was presented to the Club in memory of Joan Long by her family in 2013. Joan Long supported the Club as a Committee member joining the Committee in November 1993.

The first winner of the trophy was Margaret Taylor who achieved success in 2014. 

The trophy is currently presented to the highest scoring lady in the same competition in which the Gents Tankard is competed for.

 

Priory Garden Bowls Club, Gents Tankard – 3/2/1 Competition (combined with the Ladies Cup)

The Gents Tankard, first played for in 2011 and won by V. Chamberlain, is currently presented to the highest scoring gentleman in the same competition in which the Lady’s Cup is competed for.

 

Trophies held but currently not played for

The Harry Bowles Challenge Cup –

First won by K. Banham in 1991. Last played for in 2022. – Replaced with the PGBC cup in November 1993.

 

Ted Fowler Cup

The Ted Fowler Cup was presented to the Club by Edward (Ted) Fowler in 1993 to replace the Tom Turner Cup. The first winner of this trophy was K. Read. The Trophy was last played for in 2015 being replaced the following year with the with the Chairman’s Shield.

Ted (Edward) Fowler was known for giving a lot of time and money to the Club. He was responsible for the installation of electricity in the original clubhouse. Records to not exist to show when he was elected as Chairman but he held this post in 1991. Standing down in November 1993 when he was elected as Vice President and made a Honorary Member of the Club.

 

Triples Cup - Triples

The Triples Cup was played for between 1992 and 2003. The first winners of the trophy were, J Batless, Mrs M Fowler and E (Ted) Fowler.

 

Past Trophies

Briton Chadwick trophy replaced by the Derek Buckle Shield in 2016.
