Brooke Away - 19th June

Brooke v Priory -  19th June 2024

The Priory team went into the match looking for three straight wins on the road following victories against Shotesham and Wicklewood.

Brooke won the toss and their captain decided to ‘show Priory the way’ in the first end. The match started under blue skies conveying large puffy white clouds to distant parts of the county. Several players in jumpers and jackets were soon too warm but having decided to embrace the welcome warmer weather were later to be caught out as gusts from the cold northerly wind were never far away.

Overlooked by the house of the old greenkeeper, there was a view of an ongoing re-enactment of tennis at Queens and the sound of thundering traffic passing to and fro between Norwich and Bungay.

The green was fast and provided challenges with varying outcomes across the four rinks. One rink recorded a convincing win for the Priory team but the advantage was negated by a heavy defeat on another. The other two rinks were evenly matched with; a hard earn draw achieved by Ivan Freedman, Bet and Jann; and Mel’s team only losing by two shots on the final end.

The overall result was a loss for the Priory team with the match result; Brooke 68 shots, Priory 61 shots. However, the Priory team could take heart as the previous meeting between the two clubs at Brooke had seen Brooke win by 69 shots to 51. Perhaps next year the gap can be closed further and the Priory team can come out victorious.

After the match the teams retired to the clubhouse where the hosts treated the Priory team to a selection of cakes and hot drinks before wishing them a safe journey home and expressing their  pleasure in looking forward to the return match scheduled for the middle of August.
